Hi Liesel, I have recently returned home from 3 weeks in Hermanus, back to a cold & dark UK.

I just wanted to say that one of the highlights of my trip was chancing upon your gallery in Hermanus and taking a great deal of pleasure from your beautiful images. They were all very inspiring and you have a great 'eye' - something I feel is extremely hard to teach a photographer, this is more instinctive than taught.

As a landscape photographer myself I envy your wonderful surroundings and unique light. I have been coming to Hermanus for nearly 20 years now and always leave the wonderful landscape with a heavy heart.

I had a some lovely chats with Coleen - what a great lady! Please send her my regards!

It would be fantastic next time I'm in Hermanus to meet with you over a coffee or two and maybe we can arrange a photo outing at some point.

Ek's in die bed met griep, en staar na jou almanak van Overberg foto's (Midlands Pine Products). Ek't jare terug op De Hoop Natuurreservaat (Potberg) gewerk, en verlang nou sommer terug! Tans is ek by Sappi Forests in Pietermaritzburg. Het 1ste keer jou werk in "Weg" gesien - pragtig! Ek's ook lief vir fotografie - het geleer op die ou Pentax K1000 - en spesifiek ook vir landskappe. Het nou 'n Pentax K200D. Verbeel ek my, of was dit id Weg-artikel waar jy gesê het landskap-fotografie is eensame werk? Dit is so - tog verkies ek dit alleen, anders begin die famile kla dat Pa te lank vat! Hou aan met jou puik werk - doet zo voort!

I have nearly always been a keen photographer, since I retired my interest has grown & grown. Because of a stroke I am only partly mobile & can only photograph what I am able to get to, hence my interest in landscapes/seascapes & the above subjects.

I was born and live in the Limpopo province and was always fascinated with the beauty of the bosveld and longed to photograph some touching sights and moments in bosveld scenery (under that almost ethreal light you speak about) during the course of my life, but regretfully never did because I believed these moments needed to be captured through the kind of photography you mention which shares tendencies with painting. We bought this print back in Jan when we were staying in Hermanus and brought it back to the UK rolled up in a tube. We didn't even have a house then so didn't have an idea where it was going to hang. Now we've had it box framed and it's hanging and it looks beautiful. We love it!

I love your landscapes and as a keen newbie would be be very interested in asking a few questions if you don't mind:
1. The equipment you use and especially lenses?
2. Do you do this full time...travelling around taking photos or do you have a permanent job (I was going to use the cliche "real job" but hate that), that keeps you going?
3. Also interested in your post work...to get your pics to look that saturated, etc. I'm busy learning Photoshop and am eager to learn every technique I can to improve my own photos.
4. How did you get your work published in magazines, etc?

Thank you for your e-mail!

Strange that you should ask these questions as I have just sent out my Feb. newsletter covering a few of the questions you are asking.
1. I use Nikon equipment: Nikon D80 camera, 18-200mm Nikkor lens ( I hope to buy one more this year), various Cokin filters, a polariser filter which is almost permanently on my lens and reflector boards. Manfrotto tripod and head.
2. I am only professional for 1.5 years now, that means that I do it full time and spend 80% of my time marketing and searching for new ways to draw clients and 20% taking photos. I am lucky to have a husband who are responsible for paying the bills and support me 200% in my quest until I can contribute my share. I have also spent 10 years of my life building up my own business which I have sold prior to starting my dream becoming a photographer. Photography is very expensive to start out and you need a cushion to give you that jump start.
3. I shoot RAW, thus all photo's needs processing before I send them to the portfolio. I use the saturation tool to only a small extend, mostly the type of light which I choose to shoot in (early morning/evening) already provides ample saturation. If I use the saturation tool, I throw a black and white mask over it to prevent the already saturated and bright areas from burning a channel. Photoshop is a powerful software, but if you do not use it correctly, it will easily ruin a photo. So, make sure you read up and do a lot of research on the techniques. I have only a few that I use regularly (google any one of them for the techniques):
* levels
*contrast mask
*curves
*dodging/burning
*exposure
*noise reduction
You will be surprised to know that all the techniques can be and have for many years been done in darkroom labs.
4. Google! I surf the net looking for magazines, getting their contact info and then contacting them. Marketing is a never-ending story. You are only as good as your marketing.
