Steenbras Dam, Grabouw

Just weeks before, a raging fire tore through the reserve destroying thousands of hectares of fauna and flora, most of which fynbos. The fire burned for 5 days, fueled by wind speeds of up to 80km/h, it jumped the Steenbras Dam and ran over the mountains into Gordensbay, where it distroyed many houses before it could be stopped.

The new growth is starting to show, but the eerie quietness of the mountains are witness to the huge loss of fauna. It is a sad happening, but a necessity for fynbos which only germinate it's seeds through fire.

This scene is Steenbras Dam in the foreground, Hangklip on it's left and the Cape Peninsula at the back with Table Mountain to the left.

A sight no money can buy...
